Video Games Do Not Encourage Violence Essay - 1610 Words

Video games and violence Over the years, the popularity of computer and video games has grown. Specifically violent video games make up more than 50 % of the top selling games. These games include violent themes that involve guns, crime, blood, and gore. There is an ongoing belief that these types of games are to blame for the many acts of violence in society and have encouraged America’s youth to act out in aggression. Several organizations, such as the PTC (Parents Television Council) have moved to discourage the development of violent games while also pushing for stronger regulations when purchasing such games. There is also debate among parents and concerns on how games can negatively influence their children. So is there a direct link between video games and violence? The truth is video games do not encourage violence in society based on several factors which include scientific studies, statistics on crime, and prevention measures adopted by game publishers. Scientific Studies There have been several scientific studies to determine if video games do in fact contribute to violence. One study was conducted by experimental psychologist in 2015 at the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University. Lead by Dr. Andy Przybykaski, the study included research to observe the behaviors of children during social gaming. Dr. Przybykaski also wanted to review the affects gaming had on education performance in school. The Battle Of The Confederate Flag - 1208 Words

The debate over the recent mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina has sparked a controversy involving the presence of the Confederate flag. Apparently, there is a common perception among Democrats that the Confederates are associated with racial crime and hate in America. The suspect behind the shooting in Charleston has confessed that he acted about the idea of white supremacy in the South. A large section of the American population agrees the flag is a symbol of racism since it was established in honor of white civil war soldier who wanted to preserve slavery in the region. Interestingly, the flag has remained a monumental symbol in the states and is still erected in the front of South Carolina’s state house. However, white supremacist still upheld some of the imperial ideologies that the black community had limited rights to owne rship of property and other liberties. Interestingly, the western imperialist were the first in abolishing slavery and acknowledge the practice as immorally wrong. Also, the imperialist were interested in resources of the Southern states. Apparently, the depletion and transfer of resources from the South to the North was economically unfair. The need to defend the independence, religion, slavery, and resources to a civil war that embodied the Southern states through a Confederate flag (48). A great debate still exist as to whether the confederate flag was an important factor in the civil war. As mentioned, the Confederate states were naturally imperialistic and wanted to continue with such culture of acquiring new territories like the white settlers. In any case, the Confederates were original heirs to colonial tendencies. In fact, South Carolina and Mississippi were in the forefront in defending slavery as an integral factor in the flourishing industrialization. Apart from slavery, racial discrimination was a colonial tool propagated by the Confederates. Renegade Dreams on Isolation Introduction In Laurence Ralph’s Renegade Dreams, the citizens in Eastwood are susceptible to isolation due the physical injuries and social injuries. My main argument is, the physical injuries and social injuries have impacted their daily lives and have made some residents isolated from others around them. The theme of isolation plays a role in throughout the book as the residents use isolation to motivate themselves and pursue their dreams. This dream is curated from different residents such as Justin Cone, Blizzard, and the gangs (Divine Knights). In the essay, the topics covered are the stories of the characters and the context of isolation in motivating residents to achieve their dreams. This idea can be explained through the ethnographic data, in text citations, and the stories of the characters. Conceptual conversation The theoretical conversation Ralph explores in the book is isolation. He draws ideas from Wacqaunt and Wilson’s The Cost of Racial and Class Exclusion in the Inner City. In the article, the central argument is there is an interrelated set of characteristics that corresponds to social-structural problems in the inner city and the process has triggered â€Å"hyper-ghettoization.† The evidences Wacquant and Wilson present are mainly statistical and anthropology data.
