It has been suggested that people use social media sites, consciously or unconsciously, (Haferkamp Kramer, 2011) as a basis for social comparative functions, such as self-evaluation (Festinger, 1954). Individuals usually compare themselves with others on various characteristics such as popularity, appearance, and success (Feinstein, Hershenberg, Bhatia, Latack, Meuwly, Davila, 2013). When information is acquired of others, people will compare themselves to others (Mussweiler, Ruter, Epstude, 2006). According to Wood (1989), social comparison is not in itself problematic. The frequent use among Facebook users that are college students implies that they are likely to engage in social comparison on Facebook (Lee, 2014). There have been few studies that have examined a personââ¬â¢s psychological characteristics (e.g. self-esteem, depression, and self-consciousness) and Facebook use (citations). In a previous study conducted by Lee (2014) on how college students compare themselves with others on Facebook, there was a negative relationship between social comparison frequency and self-esteem.
